Air Boss 101
Air Boss 101 is the FAA-accepted introductory course for the Basic Air Boss (BAB) Letter of Authorization, developed under Air Boss Recognition Program (ABRP) Manual Sections 3(b) and 11(a)(i). The course prepares candidates to serve as Air Boss at Basic Air Shows, covering the knowledge base required before an evaluative conference with an Air Boss Evaluator.
Six modules take candidates from foundational concepts through applied duties: what an air show is and how it operates, the FAA regulatory framework that governs waivered events, the role and authority of the Air Boss, pre-show core duties, show-day core duties, and safety and risk management. Each module builds on the last, moving from regulatory context to the practical judgment calls an Air Boss makes at the box.
The course runs as a self-paced video series, with narrated lessons drawn from the full slide deck. Candidates finish with a 15-question knowledge assessment (30-minute limit, three attempts, 80% passing score) that confirms readiness for the next step in the BAB credentialing path.
Air Boss 101 is a prerequisite for candidates pursuing initial LOA recognition and a useful refresher for anyone supporting air show operations who wants a working grasp of the Air Boss function.
